A model of developmental canalization, applied to human cranial form

چکیده

Developmental mechanisms that canalize or compensate perturbations of organismal development (targeted compensatory growth) are widely considered a prerequisite individual health and the evolution complex life, but little is known about nature these mechanisms. It even unclear if how “target trajectory” encoded in organism’s genetic-developmental system or, instead, emerges as an epiphenomenon. Here we develop statistical model developmental canalization based on extended autoregressive model. We show under certain assumptions strength amount canalized variance population can be estimated, at least approximated, from longitudinal phenotypic measurements, target trajectories unobserved. extend this to multivariate measures discuss reifications ensuing parameter matrix. apply approaches geometric morphometric data human postnatal craniofacial size shape well frontal sinuses. Craniofacial showed strong during first 5 years leading 50% reduction cross-sectional variance, followed by continual increase puberty. Frontal sinus size, contrast, did not any signs canalization. Total decreased slightly until age increased thereafter. However, different features very dynamics. Whereas relative dimensions nasopharynx throughout development, facial orientation continually variance. Some signals may owe independent variation timing cranial components, our results indicate evolved, partly mechanically induced ensure properly sized upper airways dimensions.

A model of developmental time applied to planktonic embryos

Planktonic embryos are unprotected and experience high mortalities. Risk exposure and its consequences for survival depend very much on developmental time, which, in turn, is strongly affected by temperature. Developmental times in planktonic embryos have recently been correlated with cell cycle duration and egg size. Here, we elaborate on this by deriving a developmental time model from cell p...

Nonlinear effects of temperature on body form and developmental canalization in the threespine stickleback.

Theoretical models predict that nonlinear environmental effects on the phenotype also affect developmental canalization, which in turn can influence the tempo and course of organismal evolution. Here, we used an oceanic population of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) to investigate temperature-induced phenotypic plasticity of body size and shape using a paternal half-sibling, spli...

Waddington's canalization revisited: developmental stability and evolution.

Most species maintain abundant genetic variation and experience a range of environmental conditions, yet phenotypic variation is low. That is, development is robust to changes in genotype and environment. It has been claimed that this robustness, termed canalization, evolves because of long-term natural selection for optimal phenotypes. We show that the developmental process, here modeled as a ...

Wagner's canalization model.

Wagner (1996, Does evolutionary plasticity evolve? Evolution 50, 1008-1023.) and Siegal and Bergman, 2002 and Azevedo et al., 2006 have studied a simple model of the evolution of a network of N genes, in order to explain the observed phenomenon that systems evolve to be robust. These authors primarily considered the case N=10 and used simulations to reach their conclusions. Here we investigate ...
